National parks - what's the point?

Dear reader

I'm in the middle of a number of tasks. One of them is coordinating proposals for (maritime) tourist experiences in the Danish Wadden Sea area, as part of a broader tourism development project - the area being designated as National Park, expected to be officially inaugurated in autumn 2010.

Another is writing a critical review of a new anthology on Tourism and National Parks. For both tasks, I could use some comments or ideas about what - in your opinion - is the main objective of delineating certain regions as "national park". IS it a tourism marketing trick, is it useful for protecting biodiversity, or for securing land and livelihood for indigenous peoples? Or something else? Any comments warmly appreciated. Besides the review, I will try to write a summary, AND discuss your input here.
Best regards, Niels
